As my internship at Diane Von Furstenberg comes to an end, I look back on all of the things I have learned. Being at the office two to three times a week since May has been an eye opening experience into the fashion industry. I have learned the ins and outs of the industry and how people want you to act and work with others. It is important to realize that as an intern, you are there to help. It is not what you want to do but rather, what your boss asks of you. Everything I have done, I make sure to do with a smile. If someone asks you to help, you don't ask why, instead you must be willing to help. Through helping I believe that I am able to learn. New learning experiences are the best thing that an intern can gain from an internship. If you are not willing to learn, it makes an internship a lot more work not only for yourself, but for those around you.
I have learned some very important tips:
1) always be willing to acquire information from those who are willing to teach you. Whether it be a fellow intern or any superior. Any advice and knowledge is information to welcome.
2) when meeting new people, make sure to be friendly and always introduce yourself. Even if they don't remember your name the next day, at least you let them know.
3) there will be bad days. Every job comes with hardships, but the most important thing to remember about bad days is to turn the next day into an even better one.
4) do everything with a smile. There is nothing better than a person who is willing to clean a closet or run for coffee with a smile on their face. Remember, you are the intern here, so even if you're just getting coffee, you should be happily willing to do so.
5) lastly, meet everyone you can and keep your contacts. You never know who may reach out to you later in life or when you may need a reference.
And as Diane would say... That's a wrap!
